I am torn between wondering why I'm awake and wondering why, of all the different fic I've poked at tonight, none of them have been my lgbtfest. I think I may be up for the day regardless.

Handcuffs fic gained another six hundred words. I should probably figure out at least a working title for it. Two other fic gained more plot and a few sentences each. ~Sam and Castiel's Amazing Adventure~ possibly gained another anchor scene, depending on whether I'm going with the switch to Castiel/Sam and Dean/Gabriel or sticking with the original idea. We'll--see how that goes.

Today will probably be spent working on a number of writing projects while waiting for Doctor Who to air. With any luck, some of those will be fic with actual deadlines attached.
everysecondtuesday: glasses and milk tea in the morning (Default)
This is Tomorrow (the getaway driver remix): Donna's new temp job leads to adventure, in which Donna and Christina have incredible chemistry and I love Donna's brain.

The Bees, The Bees (The Five Times Donna Met the Doctor Without Realising It Remix): Donna goes looking for trouble (and finds it). Eee, Donna, with lots of awesome old school Who references.

Without a Chance to Pray (The Ceiling Cat Remix): In which Castiel is turned into a kitten and remains very much himself. I think my heart grew three sizes reading this story.

An Existential Crisis [the retcon remix]: This story is creepy and wonderful, in which Mary Winchester keeps her promises.

Above Us Only Sky (The Golden Age Remix): This is absolutely gorgeous, in which Anna is trapped between two worlds.

Fandom: Doctor Who
Summary: The Doctor burns cold.
Notes: Spoilers for all of Who, including some major classic Who plot points. This is kind of a remix/fic meta response to a vid. Can you remix vids in fic form? Whatever, y'all should check out [personal profile] fan_eunice's 5x07 vid, I.

My raging headache and earache from yesterday have morphed into an earache and a hundred degree fever today, plus, well, feeling like I spent last night getting beaten with sticks. It is like childhood adventure aftermath all over again, with bonus illness! As if that weren't enough, I am also experiencing the joy of cramps which are like stabbing knives in my womb. Fun!

This is to say: if I am away on aim or not responding to a comment (so many comments I still need to catch up on) or whatever, it is not you, it is me!

I thought my irrational rage at life would be fixed by finally trying out Robot Unicorn Attack after everyone in my life ever has recommended it to me, but it only makes me angrier, because instead of the promised dolphin pods following me cheerfully across the screen, I keep getting a decapitated unicorn head. It's just not right.

A few happy things:

-This love meme hosted by [community profile] threeweeks_supernatural fills my heart with love and joy and rainbows, and as soon as I feel better I am going to shower more people and characters and what-have-you there with affection. Those of you in SPN fandom (and dude, go with a broad definition of in SPN fandom; I expect to see you there, [personal profile] the_wanlorn) should totally add your own threads. My thread, for those of you inclined.

-When I am not, you know, cursing life or these HUGE GODDAMN STARS (I thought stars were supposed to be full of joy!) that keep fucking my unicorn's shit up, I find myself coming back to [personal profile] fan_eunice's latest OT3 Eleventy vid, Twlight Omens, which is full of Rory, Amy, and the Doctor being delightful. I want to draw hearts around their faces forever.

-The AO3 Vidders Auction is open!

-The Cute Overload feed is one of the few things keeping me from going on a rampage or, you know, going off to cry in bed for a few hours, whatever, they are like the same thing.

What are your happy things today?

Also mentioned in that post: "[staff profile] mark is working on cross-site friends page reading as his primary development priority right now and estimates sometime in June." CROSS-SITE FRIENDS PAGE READING. IN JUNE. Even capslock cannot convey my excitement.

two recs:

I've already talked about how awesome [personal profile] fan_eunice's current Doctor Who vid project is, but I really, really have to specifically rec Can You See The Lights. The thing about this season of Doctor Who is that I love the characters, but I was pretty sure I didn't (and wouldn't) ship any of them. I saw hints of Amy/Doctor/River and Amy/River in the last couple episodes, but it wasn't until I saw this vid that I went, "Okay, I am totally on board now." This vid takes those hints and spotlights them in all their shiny glory and makes you (me) see how absolutely amazing it could be.

[personal profile] lunarwolfik wrote Knives and Enemies Rarely Mix (Especially in a Dark Alley), which is Anna/Ruby knifeplay, omg. How much do I love The Supernatural and CWRPF Kink Meme and [personal profile] lunarwolfik? A LOT.

Color-blind racial ideology linked to racism, both online and offline.

Arizona Legalizes Racial Profiling, Sparks National Conversation on Immigration Law and Reform.

and

Arizone's Immigration Laws:
This provision legalizes the creation of two classes of people (immigrant and non) and criminalizes only one class for not carrying proof of its membership in that class. Does this ring any historical bells for anyone? Beyond becoming a "criminal" who has committed a "misdemeanour" (and, btw, being "convicted" for such a crime totally affects your immigration application), being unable to provide documentation disenfranchises you; it could even prevent you from accessing such basics as health care. This provision of the law renders one set of people invisible; it denies them access to the protections and human rights afforded members of the other class. It legalizes the dehumanization of a set of people who want to work to support their families and themselves.

users
[personal profile] fan_eunice is, as I already mentioned, doing a really cool weekly Doctor Who vidding project. Right now, her posts revolve mostly around vidding, Doctor Who, and China Beach.
[personal profile] bossymarmalade has fabulous links, thinky posts, and also recs in a number of fandoms (including Avatar the Last Airbender) and is all around good people.
[personal profile] charlieblue has these occasional picspams that are amazing, meta, episode reviews, promo posts, and more in a variety of fandoms including Fringe, Doctor Who, and True Blood, and as if that's not enough, she also writes excellent fic. The only downside: I would not blame you for hating her for being so talented.
[personal profile] the_wanlorn has been posting a poem a day lately, and it is very happy-making. All of her fandom posts (in Lost, In Plain Sight, Bones, and more) are so enthusiastic that even though we don't share many fandoms at the moment, they never fail to cheer me up, even when she is raging about the many ways her fandom of the moment fails. You should subscribe to her and tell her that the world needs the Booth/Brennan/Sweets fic she could be writing now.

Tonight I'm going to see The Losers with [personal profile] lizfu. interesting. no, wait, the other thing: tedious. by [personal profile] ciderpress, in which [personal profile] ciderpress lays out some really good points on Glee, white privilege, and hipster racism.
This is what happens when people steeped in white privilege make jokes about racism with the victims of racism, rather than the racists, the butt of the jokes. This is why people steeped in white privilege don't really know how to make "jokes" about race that non-white/chromatic/poc think are funny. This is what happens when apologists try to wave away critique of race issues in real life, in entertainment and pretend there isn't a problem, pretend it doesn't contribute to society, to culture, to our every day lives. Racist speech in the guise of jokes becomes okay. Racism becomes okay, racism becomes normal, ordinary.

[community profile] tenwomen looks incredibly cool. "The Challenge: produce 10 creative works (via writing, fanart, vidding, or any other medium) in which the central main or narrative character identifies as female." I think I could at the very least make half that, with my next Ruby project, finishing that Devil Wears Prada fic, the Jordan Todd on vacation with the BAU femslash I started as a drabble for [community profile] dark_agenda (which, yeah, dropped the ball there), the yearly Juliet femslash, and one or two other things I have lying around. A year is a very long time! It is definitely a possibility.

How excited am I about Going Postal? Very! I saw someone else comment on the general weirdness and disconnect of a blond Vetinari, but if that's the only thing that doesn't match for me, I will be one very happy penguin indeed.

I keep shuffling this around in my recs drafts, but really, you should all experience it as it's happening: [personal profile] fan_eunice has an amazing vid project in which she posts her episode review every week in vid form. Victory of the Daleks is my favorite so far, but they are all epic.

Tears for Fears Curt Smith "Inner Black Woman": in which Tears for Fears fails it up.
I think it was meant to be funny. I think it was meant to be a compliment to Black women. But it was neither of those things. Why the joke wasn't about channeling one's inner Oleta, which might have skirted the race issue, I don't know. But I do know the comment was made public, and it hurt me and it hurt some friends. A white man was given a chance to explode the box of stereotypes, and instead it became another opportunity to shove him - and singers like me - right back into that box.

Viacom's efforts to disguise its promotional use of YouTube worked so well that even its own employees could not keep track of everything it was posting or leaving up on the site. As a result, on countless occasions Viacom demanded the removal of clips that it had uploaded to YouTube, only to return later to sheepishly ask for their reinstatement. In fact, some of the very clips that Viacom is suing us over were actually uploaded by Viacom itself.

Fandom: Doctor Who
Summary: Torchwood One really does need to be protected from what it wants.
Music: "Protect Me From What I Want" by Placebo
Notes: Spoilers through the end of season two. While any vidding advice will be appreciated, this is a feeling my way around the vidding process sort of vid. It's fun, it's dark, and it was an interesting tool for learning. That said, Windows Movie Maker and its crashes-every-five-minutes self can go die in a fire. I forgot to put in credits, but this is just a lesson learned for next time. If I'm forgetting any information you'd like to know, feel free to ask. If you'd like a a different format than .wmv or a different size or even a different download site, I will look into that on Tuesday. Tonight I'm going to collapse so I can travel tomorrow.

Directive: Protect Torchwood One from Alien Technology. (Attached is a list of reasons why this is necessary.)
everysecondtuesday: glasses and milk tea in the morning (Default)
Windows Movie Maker is everything terrible I thought of it before and more. If I am reasonable and have no further lapses in judgment, I will never again vid with linear editing software. That said, WMM didn't mangle the audio beyond hope of salvage like ZS4. So there's that.

And I won the battle! I said either I would finish this vid or it would finish me. It was a near thing, but it's done. No, you do not want to know how many hours I have spent in front of the computer since last night, nor do you want to know whether I've slept or just subsisted on caffeine.

Anyone have hosting suggestions for a 26.5 MB vid? It's Doctor Who, set to "Protect Me from What I Want" by Placebo.

(And if there already exists a vid in this fandom to this song about Torchwood One's doomed love affair with alien technology, please don't tell me. At least not for a few days, because agh. As I asked [livejournal.com profile] hello_scorpling, why did no one warn me that vidding was like going on a three day bender and waking up after in an alley with empty spray paint cans and broken bottles of what was once tequila surrounding you, no pants, and foremost at your thoughts the dawning realization that unlike many people and their works of beauty through the medium of tags, you are not an artist, but a vandal?)
everysecondtuesday: glasses and milk tea in the morning (Default)
It is 6 in the morning, and I still cannot tell you which I hate more: Windows Movie Maker or ZS4. On the one hand, ZS4 does strange things with the audio and refuses to believe I don't have some sort of vendetta against my eardrums, one which can only be calmed by a long and bloody war. On the other, Windows Movie Maker continues to crash and drag with it into the abyss my hopes, dreams, and very soul.

Of what I have managed to make and save so far, I have about forty seconds of Torchwood One's final days to "Protect Me From What I Want." If anyone else has already made this vid in a better form than newbie experiments, please don't tell me. I may have a shred or two of soul left to crush that WMM hasn't gotten to.

Though that is a very, very precarious "may."

Why did I decide to give all the freeware a try before any trial versions? Oh, yes, because I hate myself.
