Between that J2 story, that bandom story, and Hobbs's latest (disability) fail, I have to wonder if there is something in the water this week. That's not even going into that horrific and triggering story dealing with child abuse and sexual assault.

--

I have a bunch of thoughts on warnings and labels, lately, and their usefulness as tools for navigating toward or away from things depending on needs, but I think they need to simmer longer. I do want to point out that I read every comment on my post about warnings and triggers (contains triggering content for sexual assault) (and have come to the conclusion that what I mean and what different people in fandom mean by certain labels can be vastly different). I know I said ahead of time that I probably wouldn't be able to respond to all comments, but wow, how true that actually was. Point being: I definitely was (and am) listening, even if I haven't done a lot of replying.

My amazing artist BFF has prompts open through midnight tonight. I am probably going to make random demands of her close to the deadline.

A multifandom mix challenge is being put together, in which people create mixes and others claim and write fic for them. Y'all should go give opinions.

SKTSO is my new favorite fandom acronym.

For the three of you on the internet who haven't seen it: this Supernatural comic by glockgal is amazing.

Sea turtle films self, becomes YouTube sensation.

Bobcat kittens.

Recently, I found an old copy of Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri and was curious if it would run on Windows 7. The opening screen is a sea of black with two outlines of tan boxes set in the middle, but once I click the right button, everything runs fine. I haven't made it very far (world domination will never be mine at the rate I am going), but I am kind of in love with the guilt-inducing quit menu.

(Other things I love: tvtropes using a modified version at the bottom of its page on Alpha Centauri.)

A Doctor Who primer by The A.V. Club. I know some of y'all are tempted to finally get into Who, and this is a great time to do so, with a new Doctor, a new companion, and a new showrunner. Reading the primer isn't necessary, but it does give you a little bit of background for those interested.

The dos and don’ts of defending Muslim women:
Being an ally is the same as being a true friend: respecting my wishes, even if you may want something different for me; helping me when I need it, without thinking me helpless; and viewing me as an entire person.

Feminists Don't Understand Muslim Women

I doubt Nathan Lane feels threatened: These things are fucking amazing.

Assorted recs in Supernatural, Doctor Who, Chuck, Leverage, and Criminal Minds:

Words Get in the Way by [personal profile] epiphanyx7 is a Jo/Castiel fic set before 5x10. It's bittersweet, but the sort of bittersweet that heavy on the sweet and well worth the bitter.

One More Thing... by [livejournal.com profile] maskedfangirl is a short, fun fic with Dean and Castiel set early S5.

Fussy by [personal profile] sahiya is adorable Eleven & Amy fic.

Geronimo? by [livejournal.com profile] leelakin, art in which Eleven is adorable.

[community profile] intoabar has up a fic masterlist. In which two characters from different fandoms walk into a bar.

The Clusterfuck Job by [archiveofourown.org profile] kisahawklin, in which "Reid walks into a bar and meets... Hardison." Go, read! It is amazingness.

Chuck from the Burbank by [personal profile] kuwdora: This is a lot of why I love Chuck (the character; my show love has more reasons). To be honest, my Chuck love (and Chuck love) has kind of suffered this season, but this vid makes me want to give it another shot and at least see where the last couple episodes take me. This vid is fun, lighthearted, and what I'd hoped for from S3.

Today's been kind of odd, but not in a bad way. A headache meant I didn't do the usual gathering with my dad's side of the family, but it's finally gone away, and my mom gave me an Easter basket filled to the brim with Cadbury eggs. I am set for the year.

On Eleven's first episode of Doctor Who; not very coherent in my glee )

In sum, I enjoyed the episode and am very much looking forward to seeing where the series takes us.

The Criminal Minds Kink Meme: The Second: I am probably not playing, but I will definitely be skulking around looking for Derek/Penelope, Derek/Spencer, Penelope/Spencer, Derek/Penelope/Spencer, or Jordan/Emily goodness.

5 Ways The Google Book Settlement Will Change The Future of Reading: This is definitely something I ought to read up on further.

I think everybody needed this tonight: A lovely piece of sequential fan art that serves as a coda to 5x16 of Supernatural. The last panel is my favorite.

An Alicia/Kalinda picspam of amazingness by [livejournal.com profile] freya86. Just. Eeee. If Kalinda were real, I would marry her.

The Losers has both Zoe Saldana and Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and y'all know how I am about characters who are losers and faily in fun, happy ways (see: my thoughts on early Psych (this is also a reminder that I really need to port my old entries over, because that entry is only on LJ, sadly)). Also, may I repeat: ZOE SALDANA. Even if [personal profile] lizfu were not totally on board watching this with me (and she is), I would still be attending opening day and just go on my own.

Tears for Fears Curt Smith "Inner Black Woman": in which Tears for Fears fails it up.
I think it was meant to be funny. I think it was meant to be a compliment to Black women. But it was neither of those things. Why the joke wasn't about channeling one's inner Oleta, which might have skirted the race issue, I don't know. But I do know the comment was made public, and it hurt me and it hurt some friends. A white man was given a chance to explode the box of stereotypes, and instead it became another opportunity to shove him - and singers like me - right back into that box.

A lesson in good vs. bad irony thanks to Amanda Palmer, in which [livejournal.com profile] sparkymonster lays it out. (Warning: pictures may be triggering.)

Idle Pastime: In Off Hours, Truckers Pick Up Stitching This article is dear to my heart.

New Doctor Who stopped at Heathrow airport with sonic screwdriver Eleven is going to give Five a run for his money on sheer adorableness.

Dinosaur, in which geese are revealed as our mortal enemies and possibly part-Velociraptor. I may have hurt myself laughing.

Speaking of Velociraptors: Chaos, a tiny fic in which Castiel is a BAMF and takes on a pack of Velociraptors, Dean yet again reveals his inner, hidden geek, and Sam argues that dinosaurs are totally monsters.

Cas vs. Dino, a crayon drawing of awesomeness.

Castiel & Hunters, which is what happens when you mix Supernatural with Calvin & Hobbes to make one Tuesday very, very happy.

Really, the whole Castiel-Centric BAMF & Schmoop Fic, Art, and Vid Party is my happy place lately.

Youtube vs. Viacom, in which Viacom engages in actual sockpuppetry:
Viacom's efforts to disguise its promotional use of YouTube worked so well that even its own employees could not keep track of everything it was posting or leaving up on the site. As a result, on countless occasions Viacom demanded the removal of clips that it had uploaded to YouTube, only to return later to sheepishly ask for their reinstatement. In fact, some of the very clips that Viacom is suing us over were actually uploaded by Viacom itself.

Call for Submissions: Elementary Erotica: Submission deadline is June 30.
Was more going on between Watson and Holmes than friendship? What are the missing details of Watson’s courtship of Miss Mary Morstan? Could “The Woman,” Miss Irene Adler, have had other misadventures before or after her run in with Holmes?

Sign-ups open through April 4 for [community profile] temeraireficfest.

[community profile] ladiesbigbang continues to look amazing. I am thinking of trying to rework the (not at all flash fic, because I fail at moderation) Jordan Todd/Emily Prentiss with side Derek Morgan snark turned BFFery fic into something for that.

--

Speaking of awesome ladies, is anyone watching The Good Wife? Tiny spoilers for the episode 'Infamy' ) This show makes me so happy for its competent, sexy women.

Genius thing I did today: dropped something heavy on my foot, tearing off some skin and bruising it in the process. Genius.

I've hit a minor fic writing slump.

It probably doesn't help that I can't decide what to focus on. The road trip fic is currently in the percolating stage, I feel like I would need to do more research if I actually made a serious attempt at what would be a long-ass college AU, the wall sex keeps stalling, the postponed apocalypse kid fic has a billion and one unanswered questions and four pages that need typing up (I hate transcribing), the angel condom one makes no sense whatsoever, the Ruby/everyone fic is on the backburner, and I can't decide how long it takes Castiel to make it to the Roadhouse in the retirement plans fic. I suppose I could poke at one of two cracked out things I've considered writing based on my conversations with [personal profile] cimorene, but I really don't need any more additions to my SPN folder. I really, really, really don't. And that is without taking into account the book of AUs project that apparently would not be a completely different story each chapter, because I figured out what the overarching plot would be. I seriously need help here.

I suppose I could work on the Leverage steals The Daily Show fic, but I'm still not sure why they're stealing the show other than it makes Hardison really, really happy--even when Eliot has to knock out John Oliver and stuff him in a supply closet. (Hardison totally gets a moment with Aasif Mandvi and has Parker steal one of Jon's cheap Bic pens as a souvenir.) Point being: it's still in the percolating stage, too.

Suggestions?

Most of these recs are Supernatural and hosted on LJ (with one amazing White Collar fic on DW):

This Misha Collins/Castiel vid is adorable.

Five Times Castiel Played A Taylor Swift Song, in which Castiel attempts to (inexpertly) woo one Sam Winchester. (Castiel/Sam)

Has Finally Found Me, in which Castiel is allowed to re-enter the Heavenly Host on one condition: temping as a Cupid. (Castiel/Dean)

Sunny Banks of Sweet Deliverance by [personal profile] shirozora (Also available on LJ and AO3.) This is my favorite coda fic for 5x14 thus far, in which Cupid is both awesome and highly inept, not to mention bonus Crowley. Or, in [personal profile] shirozora's words: There is no art of wooing Dean Winchester. There is however a clue bat. (Castiel/Dean)

On the Castiel and Cupid theme, Happy Valentine's Day, Dean, fun Castiel/Dean fan art.

So apparently there's a Multifandom College AU Comment Fic Meme. I may or may not have started a terrible fic for it, but that's not what's important here.

What is important is that someone wrote Murphy/Dresden fic (Dresden Files) for it. *twirls it*

You Ruined Everything (In the Nicest Way) by [personal profile] jmtorres: The only thing I can really tell you about this amazing, amazing White Collar gen fic without spoiling anything is that it trod upon my heart in all the best ways. I was seriously clutching my chest and making happy wheezing sounds of joy, all, "MY HEART. MY HEART."

This Saturday I'll be in Chicago hanging out with [livejournal.com profile] svmadelyn. Is anyone interested in catching dinner with us?

I'm currently trying to decide if I want to go to Con.txt. Are any of you going? Anyone with an open hotel space? Reasons why I absolutely shouldn't miss it? Reasons why I should wait two more years for it to come around again?

[livejournal.com profile] lassiterfics has a post about if Supernatural were genderswapped: wherein the "rehymenated" line would actually make sense (LJ). I would watch the hell out of that show.

You Know That's Right, a Gus/Shawn ficathon of awesome.

Tin Soldier by [livejournal.com profile] unoshot (LJ). I've had this on my to-rec list for a week. It's gen case fic and makes some really awesome use of repetition. I love the relationships between Dean and Sam, Sam and Castiel, and Castiel and Dean in this.

I haven't read the fic this illustrates, but this Dean/Castiel picture (LJ, NSFW) by [livejournal.com profile] leyna is absolutely gorgeous.

[livejournal.com profile] zelempa is making a comic adaptation (LJ) of Speranza's Interrogation.

What the ever living fuck, LJ? (LJ is doing stealth redirects for links for all account levels.)

For those of you still using LJ, this link tells you how to opt out.

This--and the malware, and the gender fail, and all the many other things--is why even though I'm comfortable maintaining more than one internet home, LJ isn't one of them anymore. It's become more like that smoky coffeehouse with the terrible coffee and sticky floors that I frequent just to see my friends, the occasional awesome band, or open mike night, not because I'm actually comfortable there.

A quick question, because I have been working on slowly moving all my fic from LJ to AO3 and was planning on moving the LJ fic journal to a DW comm (no more waiting for me to friend you to gain access to most of the locked RPF!): Would you y'all be more interested in my focusing my efforts on AO3 or on the DW comm? I'm determined to finish with one or the other tonight.

If I'm feeling up to it after that--because this dizziness still hasn't gone away, and who knows how I will feel later tonight--I'm going to work more on the kid-fic, I think. I need someone to tell me that referencing my crack fic within my other crack fic is not a good idea, and the baby does not need to be temporarily named Gazardiel at Castiel's suggestion.

Some happy things:

Nowhere to Stop (LJ link): Castiel falls sideways. Okay, this is not so much happy as it makes me happy that such amazing Castiel vids exist in the world.

My Tall Friend, Sam (LJ link): This just makes me smile and smile and smile. Castiel and Dean as BFFs is an amazing idea. (Sam using this friendship to troll Dean is also amazing.)

And failing all else, baby animals are always happy-making.

What About by [personal profile] fizzyblogic is a vid about women being awesome. It has everything, femslash, het, gen, family, defining friendships; it is all about women, and they are all amazing. Very, very multifandom, and very, very worth watching.

Because [personal profile] lizfu is my best friend and I will let her drag me into pretty much anything, I'm on formspring. If you have any random questions you feel like asking me, there is a good place for it!

I've already recommended a few things in comments today, so might as well rec them here, too:

Aliens in Love, Aliens in Love: Revisited, and Reach and Flexibility: Three comics for Mass Effect 2 about Garrus and a female Shepard. These are by turns adorable and fun! Aimo is very good at that, and I'd also recommend checking out her Dragon Age: Origins art.

Important Angel Business is a SPN fic I was originally saving for a text message fic rec set (or maybe an "angels attempt to woo Sam kind of pathetically" fic rec set), but it was obvious by my last exchange with [personal profile] cimorene that she needs to read it now, and then I couldn't resist throwing it at the rest of you, too. Look, all you need to know is that it is text message fic with Gabriel. Isn't your curiosity burning at you? Don't you want to know what wonderful or horrible things Gabriel sends him? Go, read!

Adorable, fun, funny gen Hot Fuzz fic. A drabble.

Hand Over Fist
Star Trek, genderswap AU, female-Kirk/Uhura femslash. [personal profile] peganix describes it as "close to 7,000 words of Kirk being the worst temporary roommate ever," which is true, but fails to convey how awesome this is.

DETOX:
You know those old Pornbattle prompts you saved, because they were awesome, but you couldn't figure out how to make them porny? The kink_bingo squares you thought should totally be written for BFFS? All the prompts with a / where you wanted a &?

DETOX is the challenge for you.

--

I went stumbling through deviant art for a brief while last night, as one does, and today I put together links for all my favorite tabs left open.

A very random smattering of art, including Spock/Uhura, lots of gen, and so on; all art by the same artist is grouped together )

Also, a brief rant: How is it that when you search for Uhura on deviant art, on every single page there's at least one picture of her tied up? And this when it's only displaying 24 pictures a page. Seriously, fandom, what is up with this?

Needless to say, if you don't want to feel kind of rageful, you might want to exercise caution when looking for good Uhura art, by which I mean have someone else with more patience do it for you. Or just stick to going through trusted artists' favorites. When I have more patience, I might put together something more comprehensive minus some of the skeevy stuff.
